Swedish Massage
The term "Swedish Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. Some of the same strokes are used in a Swedish massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.
Seated Chair Massage
Seated chair massage is a short massage, anywhere from five to 30 minutes, done over the clothing. Seated massage typically focuses on key tension areas in the upper body including the back, neck, and shoulders. Although a professional chair massage therapist typically performs the seated massage in a specially designed ergonomic massage chair, it can also be done in a standard chair. The term "seated massage" started to come into popular use in the early 90’s. It was originally referred to as "on-site massage" because the massage chairs were portable and were usually brought into a workplace. Restored Balance does offer seated chair massages in our office AND at outside businesses and events.
Elder Care Massage
Elder Care Massage is a specialized form of relaxation massage that is customized to the unique preferences and needs of the elderly. The massage is performed while the client is in a seated position on a portable massage chair. The client remains fully clothed throughout the 15 or 30 minute session. Elder Care massage is particularly helpful in increasing circulation and mobility for elderly clients. The gentle, compassionate nature of the massage creates a wonderful sense of connection and makes it ideally suited for clients that are challenged with anxiety, loneliness and a sense of isolation.
Facial/Face lift Massage
A facial massage is focused upon releasing the stress and tension that can be held within the muscles of the face. These tense muscles are often the source of wrinkles and frown lines. A nice facial massage will help soothe away that tension. At Restored Balance, we also blend in the techniques for a face lift massage. While there are similarities between facial massage and face lift massage, you won't get a firming and lifting effect unless you specifically address the muscles involved. It's sort of like general relaxation work versus more specific or focused work. With a face lift massage, you must be very specific and deliberate with your strokes.
Hot Stone Therapy
The use of hot stones promotes a deep relaxation. The stones are placed on several different points of the body to warm and heat specific areas while the therapist massages the body using either a Swedish or Deep Tissue massage as described above. The use of the stones gives the massage a very earthy feeling. Sometimes, cooled stones are also used to provide a nice soothing contrast. The blending of these various temperatures create an amazing experience.
